"In Ogre News..."

Start Here!

“How do I start?” is a common question people ask when they come into our store for the first time. While there is no wrong way to go about it, miniature gaming can be overwhelming. So we offer several choices to help ease newcomers (and established gamers) into trying a selection of tabletop games. No matter your comfort level, here are some different ways to start gaming.

Gaming Groups

We recommend joining one of our casual gameplay groups, especially if you’ve recently found us and want to play something on a weekly or monthly basis. We feel it’s the best way to truly get your feet wet and start gaming, no matter your skill level.

You can join a gaming group anytime — no commitments required! Play when you can, and as often as you like. Groups meet once a week, once a month, or every other month, either in the evenings or during the day, depending on the game. Note: there are no sign-ups, unless specified on the calendar or social media. Our current groups include:

  • Sundays: Age of Sigmar
  • Thursdays: Warhammer 40k (including Kill Team)
  • Fridays: A Song of Ice and Fire, General Board Gaming
  • Saturdays: Bolt Action and Konflikt ’47 (once a month and alternating months), Lass & Lady Gamers Board Game Group (even months)
  • Tabletop RPGs (days and times vary, and you must sign up if seats are open for a group)

Drop-in Play

Drop-in play is an option if you can’t make it to a regular gaming group. For this, we recommend looking first for someone to play a game via our Facebook Group. It’s the quickest way, outside of meeting gamers during game nights and days, to connect with other Denizens and set up game time.

Since we don’t have designated game days for every tabletop game, drop-in gives you the chance to play specific games with others who may also play them (or want to try them). Drop-in can also help you start gaming with others in a “smaller crowd” setting, if you’re not yet comfortable playing with a larger group.

Note: our scheduled games always take priority for table space, so please be sure to check the calendar before setting up game time with someone.

Schedule a Game Demo

We know that jumping into a miniatures game right away, even a casual one, can still be intimidating. So it might be best to familiarize yourself with the rules and mechanics through a private game demo. Many people find it helpful to get a hands-on walk-through first, before they start gaming so they understand what’s involved.

You can schedule a demo for most games with our Den Master, Joe, or we can schedule one for you with a Denizen who regularly plays the game. Contact us and let us know what game you’re interested to learn.

Note: the most common demos we give are for Warhammer 40k, Age of Sigmar, Bolt Action, and Konflikt ’47, though we can arrange for other demos, depending on the game. (For example, some games of interest lately have included A Song if Ice and Fire, Kill Team, Cruel Seas, and Beyond the Gates of Antares.)

Take a Class

If miniature gaming isn’t your cup of tea, you might consider trying a tabletop role-playing game (or RPG). While miniatures may or may not be used to represent players on a map, RPGs revolve around story-telling, creativity, using the “theater of the mind”, and rolling dice!

We offer an Intro to D&D Class the first Sunday of every even month. You’ll learn the basics of playing an RPG and also create your first character. If you’re interested in being a game master, we also periodically offer a separate Intro to Game Mastering Class. Check the calendar for upcoming dates for either class!

Stay Informed and Start Gaming!

We’re always adding games and events each month. The best way to stay informed is to follow us on social media — find us with @ogresdengaming (on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram). We make early announcements on our Facebook Group page, The Ogre’s DENizens Gamers. You’ll also find regular reminders and other store info on our general Facebook store page.
